Tariff Impact Calculator

Tariff costs to consumers depend on three factors: the tariff rate applied to imports, what share of goods in each spending category are imported, and how much of the tariff cost retailers pass on to consumers (pass-through rate). Not all tariff costs are passed to consumers — retailers and importers absorb some of the increase.

As of April 2026, the main tariffs are: Section 122 (15% on most imports, expires July 24, 2026), Section 232 (25% on automobiles, 25-50% on steel and aluminum), and China-specific tariffs (~20% effective rate). According to the Yale Budget Lab (March 2026), the average American household faces an estimated $450-$770 per year in additional costs from current tariffs, depending on whether Section 122 tariffs are extended beyond July 2026. Lower-income households spend a higher percentage of their income on tariff-affected goods.
